Algerian National Liberation Front

Man on Fire

The Algerian National Liberation Front appears as an armed opponent of the French Foreign Legion during the Algerian War. Its role is shown through two operations: an ambush near Palestro that brought the Legion into pursuit, and a later encounter in which the force evaded capture. The novel offers no broader account of the organization’s structure or aims in these episodes; instead, it traces the immediate consequences of its actions for the soldiers confronting it.

Role in the Algerian War

A patrol of French conscripts was ambushed near Palestro, with many of its members killed. The Legion went after the Algerian National Liberation Front, and the 1st R.E.P. caught up with the unit. B Company was dropped to cut off its escape route, placing the Algerian National Liberation Front at the center of Guido’s first combat action.

The Palestro Engagement

Initially confused by the noise and movement of battle, Guido settled into the fighting and used his light machine gun effectively. The Algerian National Liberation Front unit was wiped out. That night, as Guido ate his field rations in the hills above Palestro, Creasy sat beside him and spoke with him for the first time beyond issuing orders, acknowledging in a small gesture that Guido had done well. The engagement thus marks both a military defeat for the Algerian National Liberation Front unit and the beginning of a cautious connection between the two Legionnaires.

A Later Encounter

Shortly after the Palestro action, B Company was again dropped behind a retreating Algerian National Liberation Front unit. This time the force escaped. At the evening meal, Creasy once more brought his rations over to sit with Guido; their conversation turned to small arms, and Creasy advised him to carry more submachine-gun magazines rather than a pistol. The contrasting outcomes—one unit wiped out, another getting away—show the Algerian National Liberation Front as an active and elusive combatant, while the repeated encounters provide the setting for Creasy’s developing mentorship of Guido.
